Q35: What is Shirk-e-Asghar?

Ans. Shirk-e-Asghar is a Riya, which means that a person performs an act of worship or does a good deed but his intention is not entirely pure and sincere, i.e., his good deed is not purely for the pleasure of Allaah. Such a person intends to gain other benefits besides.

Ans. Tawassul or Wasilah means a fervent plea. Usually people use the rank, dignity, honor or fame of some people while pleading to others for their own benefits. Likewise some Muslims of weak faith ask Allaah for their needs and favors by entreating to Him through the dignity, rank and honor of Muhammad and other good and pious people of the Muslim Ummaah.

In the light of the Qur'aan and Sunnah, there are two kinds of Tawassul (entreaty):

  1. Permitted Wasilah or Tawassul.
  2. Prohibited Wasilah or Tawassul.

Q38: What is permitted Wasilah or Tawassul?

Ans. We can entreat to Allaah through the permitted wasilah, and that is making a fervent plea to Him by mentioning Allaah's Glorious Names and Beautiful Attributes, His Mercy and Kindness.

Al-Qur'aan (which means): "The best and beautiful names belong to Allaah, so entreat Him by His Beautiful Names." [7:180]

Hadeeth: The Messenger of Allaah while making du'aa to Allaah said (which means): "O Allaah! I ask you by every good name that is yours." [Ahmad]

We can also entreat Allaah by mentioning our good deeds.

Al-Qur’aan (which means): "O you believe! Be mindful of your duty towards Allaah and seek the means of approach and strive in His cause as much as you can so that you may be successful." [5:35]

The "means of approach" mentioned in the ayah above means that we should seek the approach adn nearness to Allaah through the good deeds because Allaah has mentioned to "Strive in Allaah's cause" which is Jihaad and Jihaad is a good deed and a source of nearness to Allaah.

Hadeeth: The Messenger of Allaah said to a companion who wished the Messenger's company in Jannah (heaven) (which means): "Help me to be with you in Jannah by offering nafl prayer abundantly." [Muslim]

Note: Here the means to approach the desired wish has been recommended through nafl prayers, which is again a good deed.

Hadeeth: The Messenger of Allaah told us about the three people who were stuck in a cave and when they mentioned their good deeds while making fervent plea to Allaah, Allaah accepted their requests and prepared the way out of the cave for them. [Riadh-us-Saleheen]

Q39: What is prohibited Wasilah or Tawassul?

Ans. Prohibited wasilah is:

  1. To go to the graves of the good people and ask them to fulfil your needs and desires;
  2. Use their personalities to entreat Allaah while asking for our needs;
  3. To call the people who have passed away believing that they can listen to our pleas and help us.

This kind of wasilah is considered to be Shirk-e-Akbar.

Al-Qur'aan (which means): "Call not on any other besides Allaah, such will neither profit you nor hurt you: if you do, behold! You shall certainly be of those who do wrong." [10:106]

Ans. Bid'aah is something which is added to the religion with the intention that it is rewardful.

Al-Qur'aan (which means): "Or do they have partners with Allaah who has made laws for them in religion without the permission of Allaah." [42:21]

Q41: Is it allowed to entreat Allaah by the rank and dignity of the Messenger of Allaah? For example, a person saying, "O Lord! I beg of you by rank and dignity of the Messenger Muhammad , so please make me better."

Ans. This kind of wasilah is Bid'aah.

Allaah did not mention any example of any Messenger or good person in the Qur'aan who used this kind of wasilah. Furthermore there is no proof of any of the companions ever using this kind of wasilah.

Q42: Is it allowed to entreat Allaah by the rank and dignity of the good and pious people who have died or are still living?

Ans. This kind of wsilah or tawssul is Bid'aah.

Allaah did not mention any example of any Messenger or a good and pious person who used this wasilah. Furthermore, there is no evidence from the companions of Prophet Muhammad that they used this type of wasilah either.

Q43: Does a du'aa need the entreaty of a person to be accepted by Allaah?

Ans. No. The du'aa does not need the entreaty of any person to be accepted by Allaah, because Allaah is very near to each person and He is All-Hearing.

Al-Qur'aan (which means): "When my servants asks you (O Muhammad ) concerning me, I am indeed close to him: I respond to the supplications of the invoker when he calls upon Me." [2:186]

Q44: Can someone request another person who is alive to make du'aa for him?

Al-Qur'aan (which means): "What! Do they take for intercession others besides Allaah? Say, Even if they have no power and no intelligence? Say: To Allaah belongs exclusively (the right to grant) intercession." [39:43-44]

Q46: What is the nature of intercession (Shifa'ah) of the Messenger?

Ans. Intercession (or Shifa'ah) of the Messenger on the Day of Judgement will be in the form of a special du'aa which Allaah will allow him to make.

Hadeeth: The Messenger of Allaah said (which means): "I have a special hidden supplication for anyone of my Ummaah who dies without committing shirk with Allaah to intercede with on the Day of Judgement." [Muslim]

Q47: Can we praise the Messenger of Allaah extravagantly and exaggeratedly?

Ans. No! It is not allowed to do this. His rank, honor, dignity qualities, characteristics, virtue and supremacy are uniquely mentioned in the Qur'aan and the Ahadeeth. A Muslim should stick to the way he is honored and respected in these two sources. He is mentioned as the most virtuous man of all mankind, but exaggerations in his praises and not keeping a balance between his servitude to Allaah and supremacy over mankind will create a great confusion in the Aqeedah (beliefs) and will misguide the people of weak faith.

Al-Qur'aan (which means): "Say (O Muhammad ) I am only a man like you. He has revealed to me that your deity is One God." [18:110]

Hadeeth: The Messenger of Allaah said (which means): "Do not exaggerate in praising me like the Christians did to 'esaa (Prophet Jesus). Indeed I am a servant and a slave. So mention by saying "Servant of Allaah and Messenger of Allaah" [Bukhari]

Ans. No! We cannot practice the Qur'aan without believing and accepting the authentic ahadeeth. Whatever the Messenger said and did it has been reported authentically is part of the revelation.

Hadeeth: The Messenger of Allaah said(which means): "Behold! Indeed I have been given the Qur'aan and with it something similar." [Abu Dawood]

Q56: How can we show our love for Allaah and His Messenger ?

Ans. We can show our love for Allaah and His Messenger by obeying them and by doing what they have ordered.

Al-Qur'aan (which means): "Say: If you love Allaah, follow me, Allaah will love you and forgive you your sins, for Allaah is Most Forgiving Most Merciful." [3:31]

Hadeeth: The Messenger of Allaah said (which means): "None of you can be a perfect believer unless I become more dearer to him than his father, his children and all the people." [Bukhari & Muslim]

Q57: What is the command regarding Bid'aah Hasanah in Islaam?

Ans. Bid'aah Hasanah does not exist in Islaam. All bid'aah are newly invented things and are not acceptable.

Al-Qur'aan (which means): "This day I have perfected this religion for you and have completed by favors upon you and have chosen Islaam as your religion." [5:3]

Hadeeth: The Messenger of Allaah said (which means): "Every Bid'aah is a deviation from the right path and every deviation will lead to the fire of Hell." [Ahmad]
